Step into an era that is thought to be bygone and experience a real adventure in the Big 5 wilderness at the Jock safari Explorer Camp. The camp and tents have been meticulously recreated with the similar style camp beds, canvas washing basins, lanterns etc in order to transport guests back in time. What is the Explorer Camp? Jock Explorer Camp is sold as a two night walking trail package, therefore 2 nights are automatically booked and payable at the time of reserving this unique experience. The Explorer Camp operates during the Summer months with the first trail in April and the last trail at the end of October. Each trail is 2 nights with a set arrival on a Friday (or Tuesday from 2016) The walking trails are hosted and guided by an armed qualified walking guide. Distances walked vary every day but can last up to 4 hours. A game viewing vehicle remains in camp and will be utilized depending on where guests walk that day, the trail may start from camp or depart from camp by vehicle to visit another area of the reserve. No persons under the age of 16 years can participate in a walking safari. Participants older than 60 years will be required to provide a medical clearance certificate in order to participate. Please let us know if you are interested in extending your stay at Jock Safari Lodge to include a third night at one of the other luxury lodges on the Reserve.

Jock Explorer Camp Amenities

Camp Site The camp site is unfenced to provide the true explorer ambience and tents are placed in fairly close proximity without encroaching on other tents privacy. Wild animals are able to move through the camp at any time and although all safety precautions have been followed in setting up the camp; this remains a reality. Ablutions: Each Tent has a bucket outside shower. Each tent has an en-suite bio box toilet (portable) with canvas for privacy. Tent Details - 2 x Old style beds with white linen, safari blanket & throw and pillows - 2 x Roorkhee campaign chairs & table - 1 x LED light for night time use - 1 x Old style hand basin (warm water is supplied on request or at first light in the morning) - En-suite bio box toilet (portable) - Paraffin lanterns - Guest amenities include insect repellent, toilet paper, towels, tissues, sanitary bags as well as bio- degradable shower gel and shampoo.

Area Attractions

Birdwatching For the avid birdwatcher, abundant species of bird are regularly seen on the concession including raptors such as the Martial, Tawny and Fish Eagles as well as Steppe Buzzards. Game Drives & Walks Morning and evening drives are performed in covered 4x4 Landrovers conducted by highly experienced rangers. Traversing through the reserve, the wildlife is sometimes staggering in its diversity. Enthralling sightings of elephants, a sea of buffalo horns rising from the grass as they lie resting in the growing heat as well as prides of lions, awaits one. Rock Art Throughout the concession, rock art sites dating back more than 3 000 years are found depicting the spiritual beliefs and lives of the San. During their travels, members of the tribe would congregate around a communal fire, weaving stories and celebrating the gift of life while the Shaman would meditate through rhythmic dancing, singing and clapping and while in a trance, receive visions and guidance. This medicine man would ensure the well being of the tribe, protecting them from evil and sickness, predicting the future and ensuring good hunting and rains. Stargazing With the absence of artificial light, the stargazing at Jock Safari Lodge is phenomenal and amongst the best in Southern Africa.
