Dorado Lodge is a select, exclusive private lodge situated at Praia da Barra, just a short drive from the harbour town Inhambane, approximately 490km north of Maputo. This region with it's unspoilt beaches, crystal clear waters, abundant sea life and friendly locals, is one of Mazambique's favoured holiday destinations. Praia da Barra is the southern point of the Inhambane bay. The road from the border is tarred up to Bar Babalaza, 7kms from Praia da Barra with the last part of the road being gravel. The lodge is accessible by 2X4 vehicle but a 4X4 or 2X4 with difflock is recommended if you want to park next to your chalet or explore the area. Dorado’s chalets, built on ironwood stilts with raised decks are picture perfect. Situated on the primary dune, you will experience an exceptional 180° view of the turquoise bay, as you look through huge, gently swaying coconut palms. Soak up the tropical view of the coconut silhouettes from the entertainment areas as well as from all the bedrooms. Dorado allows you the opportunity to simply enjoy the privacy and all the benefits of the lodge, but less than a kilometre away, neighbouring lodges offer excellent restaurants, bars and various other forms of entertainment. Dorado Lodge Accommodation Chalets are luxurious. Each unit is tastefully built with a unique combination of brick and reed walls. The chalets are fully equipped providing all the facilities required of a self-catering establishment. Along with comfort and style each unit offers en-suite facilities. Dorado offers accommodation for the family as well as a bigger group. A fantastic six bedroom, six-bathroom unit is available, accommodating as many as sixteen people. This unit has a very spacious kitchen, living room and veranda. Prepare your own catch, or buy freshly caught fish, prawns, crab, crayfish and calamari from local fisherman to prepare in your fully equipped kitchen. Fresh fruit and vegetables are available at the market in Inhambane. You can also visit one of the many excellent restaurants in the area. Chalets are serviced daily and an assistant is available 24 hours. Also provided is a secure boat and 2 x 4 parking area. Cellphone reception on the premises. Jogging, walking, shell collecting and swimming You will find kilometres of safe, wide open beaches for this purpose. Swimming is safe with very pleasant water temperatures that reach up to 29°C in summer. Various tidal pools offer excellent warm, safe and carefree splashing and snorkelling for young children. Snorkelling Can be done from the shore or from boat where various shallow reefs can be accessed. Scuba diving A couple of fully equipped dive centres with all necessary facilities are in operation at Barra. Excellent reefs with dive depths that vary from 8 metres to 30 metres offer a variety of diving experiences. Huge mantas and whale sharks are commonly seen along with a variety of reef fish. Deep-sea fishing This area is famous for its excellent fishing and hosts several fishing competitions. A huge diversity of game fish abound including king mackerel, wahoo, dorado, kingfish, yellow fin tuna, greater barracuda, sailfish and marlin. Launching is smooth and easy as surf is very rare. A number of charters are available if needed. Spear fishing Some outstanding fish are speared here regularly such as king mackerel, ignobilis, wahoo and even sailfish and marlin. Water sports The calm bay and the lagoon are ideal for paddle skiing, kayaking, windsurfing, skiing, parasailing and jet skiing. Quad bikes Great fun. Bring your own or hire from nearby lodge. Beach riding not allowed. Horse riding Available about 600 metres from the lodge. What is more romantic than a stroll along the beach? Dhow trips “Charter” a dhow and take the family across Inhambane bay to enjoy lunch at Maxixe. This is a very popular pastime with visitors.
