Chigamane Beach Villa Vilanculos
Chigamane Beach Villa Vilanculos AmenitiesEach Villa comes fully equipped and extras include washing machines, ice makers and DSTV. The master bedroom has an en suite bathroom, walk in wardrobes and air conditioning. The second and third bedrooms have built in cupboards and ceiling fans and share a bathroom. The local Vilanculos bakery bakes bread daily and there is usually a supply of freshly caught fish, crabs and crayfish to be purchased from local fishermen. Take your own scale with you and watch the packaging of your purchases carefully as local shellfish sellers are extremely adept at false weighing and making the odd crayfish disappear somewhere between purchase and packing! A visit to the market used by the villagers should be made at least once, to experience local colour and flavour and some good bargains. You will struggle to find fresh milk and eggs. The water at Chigamane is safe to drink but many visitors prefer to bring bottled water.
Directions To Chigamane Beach Villa VilanculosVilanculos is 750km north of Maputo and Chigamane Beach Villas lie approximately 128 kms north of the town, on a beach road only accessible by 4 x 4 vehicles. Despite the long stretches now being re-surfaced, Mozambican roads are currently a slight challenge and more so the further north you travel. Two bad sections of road are under reconstruction and once this is done in a few months time traveling there by road will not be problematic. Do remember that while national roads are suited to regular vehicles, many resorts and beaches can only be reached in 4 x 4 vehicles. There are several roads to Vilanculos: the least challenging is to enter the country from Swaziland, or from South Africa either through Kwa Zulu Natal, or through the most popular border post Komatipoort. There are few, if any, options in routes. Most travellers wanting to go north will head towards Maputo, then follow the EN1 north to Vilanculos, via Xai Xai and Inhambane. Plan at least a one night stayover en route. Komatipoort has a myriad B & B’s. From Zimbabwe, travel via Mutare and head towards Beira then work your way down to Vilanculos. Another interesting route is to go through Chipinga in Zimbabwe then travel the 200km dirt road and join the EN1 not far from Save river. Adventurous 4x4 enthusiasts can head towards the Pafuri border post in the North eastern Kruger Park, then drive across the Limpopo and into Mozambique towards Massingir Dam. This route is extremely seasonal and should only be taken in convoy as there are no facilities en route. The Pafuri route is 550km from the border post to Vilanculos. It joins the EN1 50km south of Vilanculos which takes about 12 hours to drive. The Masingir route goes through Letaba and comes out other side of Xai-Xai
Area AttractionsThere are a number of things to do in Vilanculos. A trip on a Dhow is an entertaining experience as you explore the reefs around the islands, look for whale sharks, dugongs and dolphins, enjoy a beach picnic, snorkel and swim. Vilanculos offers horse rides and camel rides. Sea Kayaking and wind surfing are also popular activities. The beautiful beaches are safe to walk on, and the beach in front Chigamane is one of the nicest in the area and very quiet. This is a prime spot to buy fresh fish from local fishermen, as they anchor all the way along this stretch of beach. Chigamane beach is ideal for families, as the vast tidal range means calm, shallow water for hundreds of metres, most of the year. However, remain mindful of the tides when boating or sending children to the beach on their own. Tides come in fast and Spring tides are quite lively! If you are going out on a boat and fancy snorkeling, there are numerous beautiful sites where this can be done. There are also a few little sand islands which are lovely to just relax on. Again, remember the extreme tides and ensure that you have sufficient suntan lotion and refreshments should you find yourself unexpectedly marooned for a couple of hours. At Archipelago Sun (in Chibuene) there is a lovely reef right off the beach which is perfect for family snorkelling. If you are a horse rider, there are horses in the Archipelago. Rides can be arranged for novices and experienced riders: ask our manager to arrange it for you. Chat to the locals to find out about what is hot and happening in the town in terms of pubs, beach events and the odd volleyball game. There are a couple of good restaurants in the town where you can enjoy local specialities like Mozambique prawns and fresh-from-the-ocean Portuguese-style Crab dishes.
