Along the shores of this vast expanse of water (8km wide and 27km long) lie pristine white sands and shallow waters, ideal for basking in the sun and swimming. The saline waters are the ideal feeding ground for flamingos which flock there during the summer together with other water birds across the lagoon. Hidden behind the rolling sand dunes are the unrelenting breakers of the Indian Ocean. Accessible by boat or 4×4.

Area Attractions

- Flamingos – the migration of the endangered flamingos to the Bilene Coast happens every year and is a sight to see. - Seahorse – The lagoon in Bilene is renowned for its seahorses. The local species is the Hippocampus Camelopardalis or Giraffe Seahorse. These are also critically endangered. - Whales - late May to early November. When the winter hits and the waters become colder in South Africa, humpback whales migrate to the warm waters off of Bilene to have their calves. This is the perfect time to spot whales, as the calves cannot hold their breath very long and must surface for air regularly. If you are in luck, you may even see a mother carrying her newborn calf on her back above the water. - Turtles - late November to early February. This is when leatherback and loggerhead turtles come to Bilene to lay their eggs. Both species are internationally protected and endangered. Green turtles are local and can be seen year round. The best place to view these magnificent creatures is from the cliff that overlooks “Turtle Bay”. It an approximately a 20 minute walk down the beach from the lagoon mouth. - Coastal Reef – hire your snorkeling gear and explore the world of the coastal reef – you will be spell bound!
