Zanzibar Island, Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Masai Tribe
After an early start in Dar es Salaam we begin this optional excursion by taking a ferry to Zanzibar where we will spend the next few days exploring this fascinating island with its renowned architecture, beautiful beaches, colourful people and history. The excursion is at your own expense and costs can be adjusted depending on your preferred level of accommodation and activities.
Day 1 - Zanzibar Excursion
A local ferry will take us from Dar es Salaam (where we leave the truck) to Zanzibar. We take a transfer to the northern part of the island where we will spend our time relaxing on the beach.
Islam is Zanzibar’s dominant religion and appropriate clothing should be worn in Stone Town. Beachwear should only be worn on the beach and women are advised to wear a t-shirt and knee-length shorts or a skirt in the town. It is not appropriate to show the arms above the elbow or legs above the knee. Shoulders should remain covered and revealing necklines are not acceptable. Men’s clothing is less restrictive and a t-shirt and pair of shorts are fine. On the beach or in the resort there are no dress restrictions other than the normal ones in pool/public areas.
If you are visiting Zanzibar in the month of fasting (Ramadan) please speak to your local guide about the customs during this time. Normally eating during the sunlight hours is not allowed and some locals will make sure that you are aware of this (sometimes very loudly if you are seen). Most shops and restaurants are closed during this period, but it is acceptable (as a foreigner) to eat at the hotel or resort. The guide will tell you what is appropriate and when.
Day 2 - Zanzibar Excursion
Today is a day for you to choose exactly what you’d like to do. Spend your day relaxing on the beach or partake in one of the many optional activities on offer. Explore the Spice Islands, take a walking tour of the city or head out to the warm blue waters of the Indian Ocean and explore the underwater world through snorkelling or scuba diving.
Day 3 - Zanzibar Excursion
On the 3rd day, we head south to Stone Town, the capital of Zanzibar, where we will spend the night. Here we have time exploring the historical and unique architecture. There are also spice and seafood markets to be explored.
Day 4 - Dar es Salaam – Bagamoyo
Today we leave Zanzibar early and catch a ferry back to Dar es Salaam and return to our truck. It is a fairly short drive to reach our next destination, Bagamoyo, who’s name goes back to the days of slavery and means “lay down your heart”. We settle into our overnight spot which is situated on the beach. Here you will have the afternoon free to step into the inviting Indican Ocean or laze on the beach and enjoy the timeless views across the ocean. The town of Bagamoyo is a short walk away and you can explore this vibrant town on foot.
Day 5 – Arusha
The city of Arusha is surrounded by some of Africa’s most famous landscapes and national parks. Situated below Mount Meru on the eastern edge of the eastern branch of the Great Rift Valley, the city is close to Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, Tarangire National Park, and Mount Kilimanjaro and The Arusha National Park. The following day we will prepare for our journey into the Serengeti.
Day 6 - Serengeti and Ngorongoro Excursion
The following days are set aside for the 3-night camping excursion into the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater. This area has one of the most densely inhabited large animal populations in Africa. On the first day from Arusha to Ngorongoro, there will be time for visiting the Oldupai gorge and museum. The Serengeti excursion is in open topped 4×4 safari vehicles in order to tackle the challenging side roads in the parks. We leave our accommodation in the morning and drive to the Serengeti. On arrival we will start with our first game drive.
For those are not taking part in the optional Serengeti Excursion, you will remain behind at the accommodation, take this chance to absorb some of the fascinating local culture. Optional Activities available to be booked at the accommodation: Various Serengeti & Ngorongoro Excursion packages, Lake Manyara game drives, day hiking & village tours and many more various day trips. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner - Accommodation: Camp: Ndoro Camp: www.ndorolodge.com - Facilities: Shared ablutions, hot showers, bar, shop
Day 7 - Serengeti and Ngorongoro Excursion
We spend the entire day game driving through the Serengeti. Our route is depending on the movement of the game and sightings.
Day 8 - Serengeti and Ngorongoro Excursion
Today we explore some more of the Serengeti and make our way to the famous Ngorongoro Crater. We drive down to the bottom of the Crater, where we try and see as many animals as possible. The itinerary of the Serengeti Excursion is flexible to ensure the best game viewing experience.
Day 9 – Arusha
Today the group meets up again and we have the chance to exchange stories of the various adventures that we participated in over the past few days. In the afternoon we visit the local Masai Mara Museum.
Day 10 - Kenya – Nairobi
After crossing the border into Kenya we continue to travel towards Nairobi. Founded by the British in 1899 as a simple rail depot, the town quickly grew to become the capital of British East Africa and eventually the capital of Kenya in 1963.
