Area Attractions

The Garden Route is a popular and scenic stretch of the southern coast of South Africa. It stretches from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to the Storms River which is crossed along the N2 coastal highway over the Paul Sauer Bridge in the extreme eastern reach of the Western Cape. It includes towns such as Mossel Bay, George, Knysna, Oudtshoorn, Plettenberg Bay and Nature's Valley.

It has a maritime climate, with moderately hot summers, and mild to chilly winters. It is one of the nicest all-year-round rainfall areas in South Africa, most rain falling in the winter months.
The Garden Route is sandwiched between the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma mountains and the Indian Ocean. The Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma indigenous forests are a unique mixture of Cape Fynbos and temperate forest and offer hiking trails and eco-tourism activities. Nearly 300 species of birdlife are to be found in a variety of habitats ranging from fynbos to forest to wetlands.

Ten nature reserves embrace the varied ecosystems of the area as well as unique marine reserves, home to soft coral reefs, dolphins, seals and a host of other marine life. Various bays along the Garden Route are nurseries to the endangered Southern Right Whale which come to calve in the winter and spring (July to December).

Although the most popular exploration of the Garden Route is by car, it is also the site of Africa's last remaining passenger steam train, the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe.

Wilderness is generally defined as a natural environment on Earth that has not been modified by human activity. Wilderness areas are considered important for ecological study, conservation, solitude, and recreation. Wilderness is deeply valued for cultural, spiritual, moral and aesthetic reasons as well; some nature writers believe wilderness is vital for the human spirit and creativity.

Driving Directions:

From George Airport to Wilderness Dunes (25km)
100 meters prior to exiting the airports parking a slip road to the left towards George will appear (DO NOT take this turn), follow the road straight until you reach a T-Junction.
At the T-Junction take a right and follow this winding right bend road for about 1km.
On the left hand side, a green sign towards George will appear (N2 George), take this left on-ramp.

This part of the N2 highway is known as the "garden route road" and will take you from George to Wilderness, to Knysna, to Plettenberg bay and so on.

The N2 begins as a triple lane highway and will increase and decrease in size until you begin traveling on a single lane road.

Once you have crossed over the Lagoon you should see a road called South Street (a Caltex garage is on the right), take a right (Caltex is now on the left).

Turn first right again (before the turning circle).

After traveling straight for about 100 metes the road bends to the left but in front is a covered guardhouse called "gardens estate", sign in with the security guard and follow the brick road for 900m until you reach the Wilderness Dunes reception.
