Victoria Falls Safari Lodge

DestinationVictoria Falls
The Victoria Falls Safari Lodge is a luxury haven in an unspoilt area of Zimbabwe. The property is set high on a plateau overlooking the Zambezi National Park, and a mere 3km from the Victoria Falls. The views from the lodge are spectacular and a great variety of wildlife can be spotted at and around the nearby waterhole. These include elephant, kudu, buffalo, waterbuck and various other smaller animals. The entire lodge has been built to afford its guests the best views of the bushveld, the National Park and the waterhole. Each room has its own private balcony to ensure great views, and binoculars are available from reception if you’d like to get a close-up view. The lodge is decorated in warm African patterns and colours, creating a very homely feeling. We loved the extra length beds and the remote-controlled air-conditioners. And if that doesn’t sound like luxury – consider the fact that there are phones in the bedrooms, bathrooms and lounges of the suites. The staff at the lodge are really friendly and quite used to the needs of international guests. All the public areas are based in one beautiful wooden structure. The building is multi-levelled, and each floor surpasses the previous one with its fabulous views. The top floor has a small lounge and the most spectacular look-out spot of all. We could easily see some kudu and impala having a drink in the distance. The lodge’s Buffalo Bar is also situated on one of these levels and overlooks the beautiful rock pool and its lush surrounds. Dining at the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge is quite an experience, especially if you choose to dine at the nearby The Boma – Place of Eating, an open-sided restaurant sheltered by the indigenous Gusu forest. Here you will be subject to a cultural experience of note. The evening kicks off with the custom of pre-dinner hand washing and tasting of the local beer, followed by a performance by traditional Ndebele dancers and singers. While you enjoy the vibrant entertainment you are treated to delicious Zimbabwean dishes, fish, a variety of game meats and stews. We recommend the deep fried kapenta with groundnuts if you’re after something completely different!

All the rooms have air-conditioners and overhead fans, en-suite bathrooms, hairdryers, telephones and electronic safes. All the beds are extra long and cots are available for small children and babies on request. The rooms are decorated in natural fabrics with a strong African feel. Each of the rooms has its own private balcony with views of the Zambezi National Park. The bathrooms have luxury baths and separate showers with massage jets – we really liked these! We also liked the fact that the range of complementary toiletries included sunblock and insect repellent. All the beds are equipped with mozzie nets and repellent mats to ensure a peaceful night’s sleep. The rooms also have tea and coffee making facilities and a variety of books on all kinds of nature topics. We found these quite interesting, and combined with the binoculars available from reception – our balconies became great viewing stations. The suites are even better equipped with telephones in the bedroom, bathroom and lounge; a fully stocked mini-bar and great coffee table books. They also have their own sunken lounges, guest toilets, large bathtubs and towelling bathrobes. Dining The Victoria Falls Safari Lodge offers its guests a couple of restaurants, a bar and 24 hour room service. The main restaurant is called Makuwa-Kuwa and overlooks the nearby waterhole. Apart from its great views of elephant and buffalo, it also offers an a la carte menu of local, regional and international cuisine. The restaurant is large and seats between 90 and 110 guests at a time. Breakfast is in the form of a buffet and includes cereals and home made muesli, health bread, oven-fresh pastries, jams, cold meats, a selection of Zimbabwean cheeses, fruit and fruit juices. Lunch consists of light pub meals such as sandwiches, health drinks, speciality coffees, pastries and homemade ice creams. A selection of speciality coffees and teas are also available, including Zimbabwe’s own Nyanga Estate tea. The interesting dinner menu includes appetisers such as Seared Ostrich Fillets (flash fried strips of ostrich tenderloin with herbed corn bread, drizzled with a sun dried tomato and balsamic vinaigrette), their own unique Mosi Oa Tunya Salad, Zimbabwean 'Vumba' Cheese (deep fried soft cheese wedges rolled with sesame seeds, and served with a red onion marmalade) with mains ranging from Wok-fried Crocodile and Vegetable Strips to Grilled Marinated Warthog Fillet. Less adventurous, but equally satisfying meals are also available, as well as vegetarian dishes. They also have an extensive dessert menu that caters for all tastes – from the health conscious (Fruit Kebab - skewered seasonal fruit pieces drizzled with cinnamon honey sauce with toasted pecan nuts) to the decidedly decadent (Falls Brandy Tart - a hot pudding filled with dates and honey and served with vanilla ice cream). The restaurant is ideal for themed dinners and the different themes on offer include Colonial, Into Africa, Nandi (home of the beautiful African queen). It also caters for business lunches and cocktail parties. As an alternative, guests can dine at the nearby The Boma – Place of Eating for a dining experience with a difference. The meals are accompanied by a show of traditional singing and dancing as well as storytelling, future-gazing and other local traditions. The Buffalo Bar overlooks the nearby waterhole and has its own game viewing platform. There’s nothing better than having a refreshing drink while watching a herd of antelope graze and take to the water.
