Sanctuary Olonana

This small and exclusive camp, the first of Sanctuary's luxury safari properties, was built along sustainable lines which, along with our innovative wetlands and tree-planting projects, have earned Sanctuary Olonana a silver award from Ecotourism Kenya. The Masai Mara is fabulous for seeing big cats, their prey and all the Big Five. It is also the stage for the greatest show on Earth - the wildebeest migration.

Sanctuary Olonana's main dining room and veranda command views over a dramatic stretch of the Mara River. See, and hear, the family of noisy hippos who colonise the banks below the camp. Experience first hand the sheer scale of the annual wildebeest migration across East Africa. The camp has a library, a pool and even an organic garden where much of the food served in camp is grown. And who could forget the mini-spa where guests can experience traditional African remedies alongside French marine therapies from Thalgo.

Sanctuary Olonana Amenities

Sanctuary Olonana is a small luxury camp with 14 spacious tents. Each tent has floor to ceiling mosquito netting, en-suite bathrooms with hot showers, flush lavatories, solar lighting and large, river view verandas. The main dining room and veranda commands a dramatic stretch of
the Mara River providing the perfect setting for breakfast, afternoon tea and after dinner star
gazing. There is a swimming pool,a mini-spa and a small gift shop.

Area Attractions

Included in the rates are game viewing drives, a cultural visit and, weather permitting, a bush meal or sundowner. Game Drives The Mara is a fabulous place for seeing big cats as well as all of the big five, a variety of plains game and over 300 bird species. From around July to October, the Mara is the stage for the greatest show on earth - the wildebeest migration - when grunting herds of wildebeest and zebra rush across the rivers between Tanzania and Kenya, attracting crocodile, lion and cheetah. Cultural Interaction Sanctuary Olonana works closely with a Maasai village which we help support by offering employment and donations to various community projects.

This was a great spot in the Masa Mara. The location along the river was magical with the hippos frolicking in the water. Mr, King was the manager and a great host to accomodate your needs. Big John the chef did a great job - they even have a pizza oven! Our driver Abdul was excellent. Spa was nice as was the pool. Rooms were nice sized and very attractive. We would recommend it highly.

I dont know where to begin all i will tell you is that Olonana is a very special unique place, I call it my second home. The staff are so friendly, hospitable and treat you like family, the Manager, King Leopold , (befitting name to the palace he runs) along with his expertisein all fields and his team, made sure that our trips to the Mara have been unforgetable. This is the 8th time that my family and I have been to Olonana, If its not Olonana , I will not go. The food is exquisite, Its like you have your own personal chef to make whatever you like, how you like it and when you'd like it!!The guides are so knowledgeable, I ahve learnt so much from them , and i always look forward to going back to camp, swimming in the lovely crisp clean pool , and then retreating back to my luxury tent for a nice hot shower and then into my soft cosy warm bed for a good nights sleep. As I allow myself to drift into a deep alumber, I allow that Hippos to say their final good nights to one another and to me ... All i can say is, I truly miss home, My home, Olonana Sanctuary.

What more could you ask for?

We spent 4 nights here in late February early March and were impressed in all aspects of our stay. Location, service, food, cleanliness and attention to detail were all superlative. Our family (all adults) occupied 3 tents and I thought all were charming. You literally only need to bring good shoes, a few toiletries and a few clothes. Not only is the laundry cost included but basic toiletries, sun block, bug spray, ponchos and a hair dryer, are provided. The staff will adjust meals, games drives and activities to your whim. We loved the bed time stories and the general Eco-friendly vibe of the camp. Abdul, Christine, Mr. King, and Big John were fun and very kind. We even got to leave a bit of ourselves behind (planting trees in our names) through their Forestry Initiative. Be prepared to be jostled as roads in the area deteriorate (wash out) at certain times of the year. Overall, Olonana is a special place.
