The Royal Livingstone is an extremely classy, colonial five star hotel on the banks of the Zambezi River. It is practically on top of the Victoria Falls and the spray can clearly be seen from the gardens and beautiful sundeck terrace. The hotel has only been around since 2001 but you’d never say it. It seems as if Livingstone himself could have lived here – it’s so authentically English.
The Royal Livingstone is an ideal retreat for those with a more refined taste. It is truly colonial and exceptionally stylish. You needn’t lift a finger while staying at this superb hotel. Golf carts are available to transport you to and from your room and over the beautifully landscaped property. We couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw live zebras grazing by the poolside, blissfully unperturbed by the guests scampering around to take photographs.
The residential part of the hotel consists of 17 colonial-style villas that stretch in a half moon along the banks of the river. Each villa has 10 luxury rooms, and forms a unit in itself. This is great as you don’t have to share a building with a hundred other people. Some of the rooms have private balconies overlooking the river and the bathrooms have frosted windows that allow natural light to fill the shower and bathing area.

Accomodation at the Royal Livingstone The Royal Livingstone hotel is a 5 star luxury facility with 173 rooms. There are four different room types ranging from standard twin, standard king, standard suite and presidential suites. Of these 118 have twin beds, and 49 king size beds. The latter have their own private verandas with breathtaking views of the Zambezi and the edge of the Victoria Falls. These rooms are situated in two-storey villas positioned along the river banks.
Three of the hotel’s suites have a separate lounge and bedroom while the presidential suite offers an additional separate bedroom (optional). The beds are large and very comfortable and covered in crisp white linen. We loved the fresh flowers in the room.
All the rooms have air conditioners, satellite television, radios and videos. Each room also has a mini bar, a small safe, a telephone with message and wake up facilities and coffee and tea making station. Cots are also available to families with babies.
Disabled guests will be pleased to know that the hotel has two paraplegic-friendly rooms with twin beds. These are fitted with railings in the bathrooms and are easily accessible by wheelchair.
The décor is colonially inspired yet not overwhelming and creates a welcome, understated atmosphere of comfort and style. The bathrooms are all en-suite and have large luxurious showers and Victorian baths.
Dining at the Royal Livingstone Dining at the Livingstone is an experience in itself and a variety of options are available.
The dining room is beautifully decorated to an old-world theme and offers delicious meals. It offers an a-la-carte menu of delicious ‘Haute Cuisine’ and international dishes.
The thatched lounge and bar area is a great get-together spot where guests can enjoy a refreshing drink after a hot day. The rooms are decorated in greens and creams, with comfortable armchairs, and the outside veranda sports little sitting ‘nooks’ of differently decorated armchairs and wooden chairs – really beautiful and inviting. The veranda overlooking the river and cool green lawns is a great spot for breakfast or ‘alfresco’ lunches.
In honouring the colonial tradition of years gone by, High Tea is served every afternoon. This takes place in the lounge under the watchful eye of David Livingstone himself (the hotel boasts many artworks depicting the explorer and his adventures).
For the romantically inclined, private candle-lit dinners can be arranged on your own balcony under the stars. This is ideal for honeymooners and couples celebrating anniversaries or other special occasions.
