Rio Savane is nestled beneath a large coconut grove between the Savane River and the open sea.
Just 34km Northeast of Beira lies Rio Savane. The campsite offers basic facilities: gauzed barracas, ablution blocks, beach showers, bar, ice and limited freezer and cold-room space. They have recently opened 2 self-catering units (bungalows).
Access to the spit is by motorised dhow, with porters on hand to move all your baggage. Safe parking is provided for guests vehicles across the river.
This section of virgin coastline offers the visitor fishing opportunities, with surf, estuary and river fishing all close at hand. Deep-sea fishing is approximately 5 km to 20 km offshore.
The estuary provides safe launching and mooring of boats, but due to tidal changes, a large anchor (sea-orientated) and a rope at least five times the length of your boat is needed. (It is recommended you launch your boats at high tide only). From the estuary the open sea is easily accessible and the river is negotiable for up to 8 km upstream, depending on the season and the tide. The bottom fishing in the Beira region is normally very good. In addition to this, visitors may also try their hand at fly-fishing in the estuary.
Tropical vegetation including coastal forest, riverine forest, open wet grassland and mangrove are all found in the area. Resultantly, a vast variety of birdlife is found in the area including some rare and unusual species, such as the Forest Robin (endemic), Crestnut Fronted Helmet Shrike and the Blue Quail. There are no organised tours at present.
Wildlife to be seen in the area includes blue and red Duiker, Bushpig and Hippo. Buffalo are moving back into the region on the North side of the river.
