Matemwe Bungalows is located on the North East Coast of Zanzibar Island, adjacent to the fishing village of Matemwe and right across from the Mnemba Atoll, Matemwe Bungalows, offer its guests a perfect mix of relaxation and excitement in this magical paradise.
Matemwe Bungalows is a small, intimate guest lodge and it is by far one of the best, and most popular, guest lodges in Zanzibar Resort, offering wonderful personal service and superb cuisine. The rooms are main lodge are strung out along the rocky coastline. There is a beautiful sweep of white beach situated at the far end beyond the lodge. The thatched bungalows nestled in gardens along the sea cliff, all with views of the sea.
Matemwe is located on one of the quieter stretches of coastline on Zanzibar Island, so you won't be swamped with holidaymakers. The beach is a short stroll away. As with most beaches along this coast, swimming is dependent upon the tides. The owners have considered building a swimming pool for guests to use at low tide, but believe there is more than enough to keep you busy exploring the coastline - strolling, cycling and kayaking. A pathway has been cleared of urchins for those wanting to walk to the reef during low tide.
For divers this lodge is an extremely convenient and comfortable base from which to visit the Mnemba Atoll which can be seen from the lodge. Unfortunately they do not have a dive centre anymore, but use the facilities of Zanzibar Beach Resort which is located close by.
The atmosphere at Matemwe is easy and unpretentious. Your hosts make you feel genuinely welcome and pay attention to the little details, which make a place enjoyable. This includes bringing a tray (with a flask of coffee or tea and a tin of biscuits) to your room in the morning.
Telephone and Internet facilities available
Diving can be arranged by the lodge

Accommodation at Matemwe Bungalows Matemwe Bungalows offer their guests accomodation in 14 bungalows built from local materials to ensure harmony between their surroundings and the local environment.
The thatched bungalows are secluded and comfortable, set in mature gardens overlooking the azure waters of the Indian Ocean, they offer magnificent views over the horizon and have been decorated with a personal touch and fittings to offer a truly exotic feeling.
Other amenities at Matemwe Bungalows include ceiling fan, large mosquito net (although mosquito’s are a rare species in this area), private veranda and a hammock where you can laze and enjoy the comings and goings of the local ngalawa fishing fleet from the comfort of your veranda. All rooms have an en suite bathroom that is solar powered providing lighting and hot water.
Dining at Matemwe Bungalows The open-walled restaurant is gloriously positioned with views of the ocean. It's decorated attractively with light wooden tables and dark-blue canvas chairs.
Meals combine African and European flavours. Breakfast is a variety of fruit, yoghurt, eggs and bread. Ask for the spicy tea. Lunch is a generous buffet and dinner usually is a three-course, set meal with a choice of meat, fish or vegetarian. The desserts - choccie pud and creme caramel - are always delicious.
The chef buys fish direct from the fishermen each morning. If you manage to catch a fish the chef will be happy to cook it for your dinner.
There is a delightful open-air beach bar built around an old dhow under the palm trees on the sand. You can lounge on sofas and sun beds and enjoy cocktails or have a sedate cup of tea. A selection of games is also available at the beach bar and we found the service very friendly.
Non-resident visitors can also eat at Matemwe's restaurant as long as they've booked. Special diets are catered for, but please let us know well in advance.

Amazing view, rooms, service and facilities! This could not have been any better! The food was also well chosen each day given that options outside of the resort are limited. The only slight improvement could have been in providing more local cuisine rather than western food. The one dinner that we had of BBQ seafood was the best. Breakfasts generally were a good spread and the staff were always helpful to meet requests. Water activities are plenty (kayaking, snorkeling, scuba). Waking up every morning to THAT sun rise, sea view and porch was a real treat. Can't beat this.

After a warm welcome from the staff, with coconut drinks and a necklace of flowers, you are accompanied to your own luxurious bungalow with private veranda overlooking the sea. Having unpacked you walk through the lush garden to the infinity pool for a relaxing day in the sun. When the sun is setting you go for a drink in the bar, where the romantic seats are separated by typical zanzibarian sailing boot sails. Then it is time for dinner where very friendly staff brings you lovely food and the manager inquires, without pushing, about activities (snorkelling!) you might want to do the next day.
It was a wonderful end to our tanzanian holiday. We were not on honeymoon, but the atmosphere and staff at matemwe bungalows made it feel that way.
