Masuwe Lodge

DestinationVictoria Falls
Masuwe Lodge is a laid-back tented safari destination situated on the Masuwe estate, approximately 20 minutes’ drive from Victoria Falls Airport, and 40 minutes from Zambia’s Livingstone Airport. The lodge is easily reached by car and the town of Victoria Falls is a mere 10km away. The lodge offers a meet-and-greet service and guests are comfortably transferred to the property. The service includes customs and immigration admin where relevant. Self-drive options are also available. The 1 000 acre private property borders on the Zambezi National Park, but is not fenced in – making for great game viewing – as ‘visitors’ from the park grace the area on a regular basis. The nearby Masuwe River also ensures a good ‘supply’ of game during the dryer seasons when the animals have fewer waterholes to choose from. The lodge has two really great draw cards that you won’t find just anywhere. The lodge property is the ‘venue’ for both lion encounter and elephant back safaris. The lion encounter is a great activity where guests get to walk and play with real lions! The lions, although already quite big in size, are young, playful cubs that have been ‘brought up’ in the system. They are wild, but are used to humans and especially their ‘guardians’. Guests are briefed on do’s and don’t’s and basic safety precautions and then taken out for a walk with these magnificent beasts. Guests on the deck of the lodge can sometimes see this activity take place, and it makes for great viewing. The lions are taken out for exercise twice a day – once in the morning and once in the evening – to keep them fit. At night the lions are kept in an encampment, so you needn’t worry about one of them paying you a ‘personal’ visit (the property is also patrolled at night – so you can be sure of your safety at all times). The second drawcard is the elephants on the property that take guests out on elephant back safaris. These great big animals are amazing and we definitely recommend this activity if you would like to do a bit of ‘alternative’ game viewing, as you get to see quite a few animals in their natural habitat. The inhabitants of the area vary depending on the season, but include buffalo, leaopard, kudu, impala, wildebeest, zebra, bush buck and hundreds of different bird species.

Area Attractions

Accomodation at Masuwe Lodge Masuwe Lodge can accommodates 20 guests, ensuring personalised service and attention to detail. The accommodation consists of 7 thatched, teak and canvas chalets on stilts overlooking the beautiful bush surrounds, as well as two Executive Honeymoon Suites. Of the standard chalets, six are twin-bedded and one has a double bed. All of them have en-suite bathrooms with showers, double hand basins with mosaic designs and a flush W.C as well as dressing areas. All the chalets have private viewing decks with comfy chairs – creating a perfect game viewing base. As there are no fences around the property – you’ll be surprised at the many ‘guests’ that drop by. But don’t worry – the chalets are raised above the ground, and the area is patrolled by guards to ensure your safety at all times. The rooms are nice and big and are decorated in a fresh, understated style. We really liked the headboards made of traditional, carved, wooden door – originally used by the Shona tribe. These doors are really beautiful and are no longer being manufactured – so their the equavalent of African ‘antiques’. The lodge also has two Executive Honeymoon Suites, one with a bath and one with a shower. They have similar amenities to the standard chalets, but and are larger and more luxurious and come with double beds. Dining Dining at Masuwe Lodge takes place in the open-air dining room overlooking the nearby waterhole. In the mornings guests can enjoy views over the great bush, as the lions are taken for a stroll in the distance - and in the evenings the waterhole is floodlit and makes for great game viewing.
