Superbly situated in the lee of Mout Kilimanjaro and sheltered by the volcanic splendour of the Chyulu Hills, this classic stone-built lodge overlooks its own water hole, which is visited daily by elephants, buffalos and a wide variety of plains game. One of the first lodges ever to be built in a national park, the lodge is cool, tranquil and hushed for optimum game-viewing. It is also ideally placed for visits to all the park's prime attractions.
Faced in volcanic stone and utilising the natural rocky outcrops of a valley known as ‘the place of the young rhino', from which it takes its name, the lodge features a thatched central dining area and a rock-built bar, with a viewing terrace looking directly down on to the waterhole.
All the spacious ensuite rooms have their own verandas, some overlooking the waterhole, some the Chyulu Hills, which are one of the world's youngest volcanic ranges. As for activities, the lodge offers numerous game drives, guided walks, bush breakfasts, volcano climbs and trips to Mzima Springs, a set of crystal-clear ponds, fed by the melt waters of Mout Kilimanjaro, in which the many hippos can be viewed from a submerged chamber.

Me and my friends stayed here on the 2nd night of our 3day safari. Staff were very welcoming and friendly. The food was the best we'd had in Kenya and the views were indescribable, pictures dont do it justice! the view from the restaurant and bar area is breathtaking and over looks a large water hole. If I had more time I could quite easily have spent a whole afternoon sitting here seeing the animals come and go. There is also a fabulous view of Mt Kilimanjaro when the sky is clear. The rooms were like little cottages and each room had a great view. In the evening they have entertainment and a great guitarist who was brilliant.

The view is breath-taking, pictures do not do it justice. The only time I really regretted leaving behind the lens for my DSLR! The USP of this property is the watering hole overlooking the rooms and the restaurant. One can recline with a drink and gaze away at the animals all through the day and the night. The sheer amounts of activity in and around the watering hole is mind-boggling at night, should you observe carefully and will keep you awake. Its not like you can have a great night's sleep anyways with all the sounds outside your room :) It doesnt hurt that the rooms, the food and staff are decent.
The real star of the property is the watering hole - go there just for it.
Staff were helpful, the food options were very nice.

The place is very nice with the dining area overlooking some watering holes. We saw very few animals at the watering holes but the view was stunning and the food yummy. The rooms were nice and the bed comfy. We were booked through a safari company so we just ate and slept there and were on the safari most of the the time. Tsavo west is a well worthwhile park with a delightful variety of animals and birds.
