The Republic of Congo, often nicknamed as Congo-Brazzaville, is the smaller ones of the two Congos. As a former French colony, it was known under French Equatorial Africa. Independence for Congo came in 1960.

Air France and Sabena have regular scheduled service to Congo, while Congo Airlines operate domestic flights. Regular train connections exist, yet taxis and minibuses are often the best means of transportation. Steamers on the Congo river are worth to mention as a nice holiday adventure.

Vaccination against yellow fever is necessary, it is recommended to have a vaccination against hepatitis, meningitis and spotted fever. There is a high rate of HIV infected in the country. Malaria is widespread. Ebola plague occurred during 2003.

The African sun can be very harsh. Sun blocks, hats and sunglasses are essential during the summer months.

Republic of Congo Safety
Congo is the country of civil wars, staying anywhere outside main destinations is dangerous. The economical center Pointe-Noire and surroundings, Brazzaville and north from Brazzaville are considered the safest areas of the country. Traveling in night is not recommended. Taking photographs of strategic objects is strictly prohibited.

Republic of Congo Driving
All visitors intending to drive require an international drivers permit. Majority of roads are impassable during certain periods.
