The roots of this picturesque town in the foothills of Dumbe Mountain lie in a piece of the then Transvaal Boer Republic surveyed by HJ Maarschalk in 1888. The demarcated land was named in honour of Boer president Paul Kruger and Voortrekker hero Pieter Joubert.

Paulpietersburg played its part in the military shaping of the region. General Louis Botha met his troops at the nearby Egode River before departing to sign the peace treaty that ended the Anglo-Boer War, while the Anglo-Zulu war site of Ntombe is 30km away.
