Named after the Zulu description of its 'sweet-tasting water', Toti - as it's most often referred to - is also where you'll find the 'Place of Birds' - Inyoni Rocks - at the northernmost point of its beautiful bathing beach.
Named after the Zulu description of its 'sweet-tasting water', Toti - as it's most often referred to - is also where you'll find the 'Place of Birds' - Inyoni Rocks - at the northernmost point of its beautiful bathing beach.
Amanzimtoti was for decades included within a colonial- decreed 'Native Reserve', a circumstance that endured until 1928, when it was surveyed as a 'White Town'. During the intervening years the settlement witnessed the railway's official opening in December 1897, the construction of its first hotel early the following year, the same hotel's destruction by fire one year later and the arrival of a Station Master in 1902. This latter event placed Amanzimtoti firmly on the map as a holiday resort, and within another 30 years it boasted 774 European inhabitants...second only to Port Shepstone on the lower South Coast.
Amanzimtoti attained Municipality status in September 1952.
