Stutterheim is a town in the Amahlati Municipality and is situated at the foot of the Eastern extremity of the Amathole range, 93 kilometres to the north of East London. Stutterheim is notable for being the first town in Africa to be founded by people of German origin. In 1837 missionaries from the Berlin Mission Society founded the Bethal Mission, which still stands in the town. In 1857 three regiments of the British-German Legion under the command of Baron Richard Von Stutterheim settled around the fort known as Dohne Post which was renamed Stutterheim after the leaser of the legion. Post Dohne was named after the first Missionary in the area. There is a village and Agricultural research station outside the town called Dohne which is well known for its fortified ganger’s cottage erected for workers building the railway in the area.
The area around Stutterheim varied with the dramatic beauty of the Amathole range with its forests and plantations to the north and west gently undulating hills to the south and east. The Gubu dam on the Kubusi River is nationally renowned for its trout and the larger Wriggleswade dam to the south of the town offers fine angling and water sports.
