Maclear is a country town at the foot of the Drakensberg Mountains. The town was established in 1876 when a body of troops under Captain J.R Thompson was en route to Matatiele were forced to camp in the site where the town now stands.

Maclear is a country town at the foot of the Drakensberg Mountains. The town was established in 1876 when a body of troops under Captain J.R Thompson was en route to Matatiele were forced to camp in the site where the town now stands. The town, was named after the Astronomer Sir Thomas Maclear.
The area around Maclear is very beautiful. The town surounds interesting geological features, including the Gatberg, a mountain with a visible hole or passage through the summit, in Xhosa it is called Untunjimkala or “the opening of the crab”. There are a number of rivers in the area which teem with trout and a number of waterfalls including the Tsitsa Falls. On the road out of Maclear, into the mountains in the north are a number of features including fossilized dinosaur tracks.
