BARKLY EAST
This country town near the Drakensberg mountains was proclaimed a municipality in 1881 and was named after the then Governor of the Cape, Sir Henry Barkly. The town is surrounded by Mountains and is adjacent to the Drakensberg and Witteberg mountains.
The town was founded in 1874 on the farm Rocky Park and was named after the Governor of the Cape, Sir Henry Barkly. The town is one of the highest in South Africa and experiences frequent snowfalls in winter.
