Ponto Do Ouro - "Place of Gold” is set near the border of South Africa (Kwazulu Natal province) a 4x4 vehicle is needed to drive the road from the border to Ponta Do Ouro. A border pick up service is available.
It is possible to drive from Ponta do Ouro to Maputo on a long and sometimes arduous 4x4 track and then take the ferry from Catembe across the bay to Maputo. This road passes the Maputo Elephant Sanctuary where elephants still roam and there are camping spots available. There is no airport in Ponto do Ouro and visitors are advised to drive in from South Africa or Maputo. The last stretch is along a sandy road and 4x4 vehicles are essential.
The Mozambican town of Ponto do Ouro is fringed by sea, sand, dunes and casuarina trees, and offers a superb holiday destination. Surf fishing for barracuda, kingfish and bream is popular, while adventurous scuba divers can set off beyond the reefs and dive with sharks, dolphins and giant whale sharks.
Activities in Ponto do Ouro
Diving is good all year round but shark diving in Mozambique is best from October to March and Whale Shark diving December to February.
All diving is on reefs within comfortable reach of the launch site.
Inland is an amazing wetland. Snorkelling and diving are fantastic, and hiking is also very popular. The long and empty beaches provide tranquil meditation with every step. Horse riding is another activity offered to guests who want to work up a sweat. Birdlife is prolific here, and sightings include hornbills and fish eagles.
Ponto do Ouro Accommodation
The village of Ponta do Ouro has two main resort and numerous private holiday homes carefully restored to their original condition and restaurants, bars, shops, a market, a petrol station and a bank.
Ponta Do Ouro is a scuba divers haven - there are about six dive operations based at the resorts, which offer a variety of courses and packages.
Just north of Ponto do Ouro is another resort area called Ponto Malongane which is a smaller resort set in thick forests offering diving and fishing facilities.
Ponta Mamoli is a holiday resort situated in the southernmost region of Mozambique, just 20km from the north eastern South African border. Ponta Mamoli offers excellent diving opportunities.
Motel do Mar self-contained cabanas are found nestled amongst shady casuarinas trees and close to the beach, these cabanas accommodate up to 4 people. Bedding and cutlery are supplied. En suite bathrooms grace each cabana and there is a snack kitchen with a small fridge.
