Nacala Travel

By Zanzibar | Published 2008-03-04 | Nacala Travel Guide | Rating: 0.00

Nacala is one of the best natural harbours with a busy port. The road from Nampula to Nacala is presently in very good condition. Presently the only way to get to Nacala – there are no passenger trains to Nacalaor flights direct Nacala. You can get into one of the local buses the chapa that come from as far as Pemba, Nampula and Ilha de Mozambique. Nacala itself is still strictly a working-type town and so for beaches you will have to go to NacalaVelha (Old) a short distance to the north, or to Fernão Veloso (en-route to which you Will find Bay Diving), a few kilometres to the south.

Activities in Nacala
An interesting place to explore is Ilha Crusse, 14km, south of Nacala. During low tide the island is linked to the main land. There is a small fishing club in the area.
Nacala-a-Velha, The Old Nacala is located over the northwest side of the bay with few shops and an open street market, but little attraction for tourists.
There are a couple of good restaurants, bars and night clubs are along the way to the port.
All main banks and ATM machines are widely found in the centre of town.

One or two hotel developments focus on the foreign tourist market, and a few establishments are busy with local businesses and long stay contractors.
You can enjoy diving at the Nacala Bay.
The diving lodge situated at the well known Fernão Veloso beach also specialises in free diving. The restaurant here is open to the public on Sundays so if you are staying elsewhere it is worth a visit for Sunday lunch (you won't find roast beef on the menu but the calamari is excellent).
Note that there are three Nacalas: Nacala Porto (the port or lower baixa area), Nacala Alta (on the hillside), and Nacala Velha (old) which is the original Nacala town around the bay to the north of Nacala – well worth a visit if only to see good old Portuguese Town Planning in practice.
