The Inhaca Island lies about 40km off the coast of Maputo. It has forests, grass plains, beautiful beaches and coral reefs. Inhaca has four shores grassy plains in the north, forested sand dunes in the east, and mudflats in the south and west. More than 200 species of birdlife have been recorded on the island.
Getting to Inhaca Island
Inhaca Island can easily be reached by a ferry or a boat trip from Maputo or by a 10 minute flight from
Maputo.

Accessible from the capital, it is a favourite with snorkellers and divers who usually head for the reefs at Santa Maria and off the lighthouse, or the surrounding sunken wrecks. The Santa Maria reef has a strong drift current that runs parallel to the shore and is fantastic for snorkelling, while the Wall is a rocky ledge that drops 66ft (20m) to the bottom and harbours numerous caves and ledges filled with a variety of marine life. Attractions on Inhaca Island
Excursions can be done to the Portuguese Island, the Biology Station, Light House Beach, the Mangrove swamps, as well as the Santa Maria Wall.
Sunset cruises are also available. 3km away from Inhaca there is a deserted Portuguese Island. Crossing is done by boat and it only takes about 10 -15 minutes and picnic lunches can be arranged from Inhaca Lodge. Portuguese Island has beautiful beaches and the lagoon area is great for all manner of waterspouts. Snorkelling is also good.
Santa Maria Wall (also known as Ponte Torres) is 45 minutes away from Inhaca Island. This is a reef which is good for drift dives or snorkelling.
