Bazaruto Island is 750km north of Maputo. It is 37km long by 7Km wide. Savannah grassland is found to the west of the island, in the East there are entirely sand dunes which change colour in the different lights of the day. Mozambique’s coral reefs are among the most beautiful in the world. Bazaruto is the best place for these fragile ecosystems which are an idle place for the traveler to relax after a Southern African safari.

Bazaruto Island is 750km north of Maputo. It is 37km long by 7Km wide. Lakes on the island are a home to many large crocodiles. Savannah grassland is found to the west of the island, in the East there are entirely sand dunes which change colour in the different lights of the day. Mozambique’s coral reefs are among the most beautiful in the world. These coral reefs are ranked with Australia's Great Barrier Reef as one of the earth's superb underwater wildernesses which have a multitude of colored fish. Have fun with game fishing, scuba diving in these Bazaruto Islands. Enjoy the fun of riding at the back of harmless whale shark, swim with turtles and dolphins and look for the rare dugong.

Bazaruto Archipelago is part of a Conservation project. The aim is to maintain the ecology and social integrity of Bazaruto National Park. On Benguerra Cashew nut trees grow on the sea side of the island. The local residents use the husk from the nuts to brew very intoxicating liquor! Sisal plants are used by the locals to repair fishing nets. The leaves for Mlala palms are used to weave mats, baskets and hats which are later sold to visitors as souvenirs of the Bazaruto Archipelago.

Activities on the Bazaruto Island
When on the Bazaruto Islands you can as well enjoy the waters and you can relax on the palm-fringed beaches, bask in the sun, drink and eat seafood from this island paradise
Activities available on the island include Deep- Sea fishing, diving, Snorkelling, Saltwater fly fishing and Big Game Fishing. The best time for Marlin fishing is from mid September to the end of December. Sailfish fishing is from April to August and smaller game fish such as King Mackerel, Bonito, Travelli, Queen Mackerel are available all year round. There are also approximately 164 different birds that have been identified on the Islands. Unusual birds found on the islands green coucals, green pigeons, purple banded and black sunbirds, olive bee-eaters, mannikins, paradise fly-catchers, bartailed godwits, whimbrels and crab plovers.

Accommodation on Bazaruto Archipelago


Bazaruto Island is an unhurried, unspoiled haven, where the visitor can relax at a fine lodge which offers every comfort and convenience. In the northern tip of the Island away from the villages is Bazaruto Lodge. On the South East side of the island is Indigo Bay Island Resort offering archipelago's best food and friendly service. On Benguerra Island you will find Marlin Lodge, Benguerra Lodge and the all new and fabulous Azura Gabriel.

Getting To Bazaruto Lodge
Access to the archipelago is via the port city of Vilankulos, which is linked by air to destinations in South Africa and Zimbabwe as well as from Maputo. From Vilankulos, transfers to Bazaroto Islands are available via 17-seater plane, which takes 20 minutes and must be booked in advance or one could reach the islands by boat.

From Maputo Airport, connecting flights are available five times per week to Vilanculos. There are daily flights from Johannesburg with Pelican Air and 3 times a week with TurboMax from Lanseria. Flights are also available 2 times a week from the Kruger National Park.

Weather on Bazaruto Island
It never gets cold in Archipelago except on some evenings during the winter months of June and July when a Jacket or pullover might be necessary. Light tropical wear is recommended the rest of the year. The summer months of November through to February which are also the rainy months are extremely hot.
The average yearly temperature of 24 Degrees Celsius with high temperature rises in January and February.
