Lesotho is a landlocked country surrounded by South Africa. The country remains cool through out the year. Lesotho’s formidable terrain is created by the sheer walls of the Drakensberg and Maluti mountains, which give sanctuary to a unique developing nation.
The friendly Basotho are one of the few mountain peoples in Africa and have developed a rich culture, often in isolated villages. The entire country of Lesotho lies 1000m above sea level and boasts Thabana-Ntlenyana, at 3482m, the highest peak in Africa south of Kilimanjaro.
Its economy is based on exports of water and electricity to
South Africa. The majority of households survive on subsistence farming. Tourism is slowly growing this country. Child labour exists in Lesotho.
The best
travel to Lesotho is by bus or private vehicle. For bird watching Lesotho is enthusiastic. You can enjoy pony trekking which is well recommended. The Sani pass lies on the boarder with South Africa and is the only viable road in the country. The tourism industry is being constantly promoted and a number of hotels, mountain lodges and a national park have been developed. For the backpacker there are a number of inns and youth hostels.
Mountains, valleys and rivers provide memorable scenery of this kingdom. Many travel to come and see the mountains. The kingdom has solid traditions, beliefs and customs. In the villages you can be offered traditional porridge.
