Benin is a seaside country with long and moving history, and wild nature. Former kingdom of Dahomey with prosperous slave trading has established relations with Europe since the 15th century. Becoming French colony in 1892, Benin was granted autonomy in 1958. Current president Mathieu Kérékou established Marxist government in 1972 after a military coup, yet in 1992, he became the first black president in Africa to step down after election – in that time, Benin was already a democracy. He returned to power in 1996 elections.

Benin Location and size
Benin is a seaside country with no natural harbor and difficult access to the sea. It has boarders with Togo, Burkina Faso, and Niger. Benin covers an area of 112 620 square kilometers.

Benin Climate
With a hot and humid climate typical for equatorial countries, Benin has a long dry period from December to March and rains from March to July. Northern Benin is hotter, with best time to visit from December to April, while it is December to March for the Southern Benin.

Benin Language
French is an official language in Benin, with Fon and Yoruba being spoken widely, and at least six major and other minor tribal languages, particularly in the north.

Benin operates 1 hour ahead of GMT throughout the year.

Money and Banks
Benin's currency is the Franc (Communaute Financiere Africaine franc – XOF), as in other west African states. Credit cards are accepted on a limited basis, mainly in best tourist facilities.

Passports and visas
A 15 days visa is issued within 24 hours, unless you are a citizen of Denmark, Germany, France, Sweden or one of the many African countries – for them visa is not required. Visa information can change often, contacting local embassy is recommended for further information. Passport valid at least six months after entry is required.

Benin Infrastructure
Air France has regular flights scheduled to Cotonou from Paris, number of domestic flight services operates. There is only one railway line in Benin 600 km long. The most common means of travel and transport are minibuses and taxis. Roads are in good condition, but some might be impassable during certain periods. Most roads are just sandy and hardpacked.

Benin Health
Consult with your medical insurance provider. Be prepared for the necessity to pay in cash for medical services provided – these shall be refunded by your insurance company on your return home. Healthcare in Benin is on acceptable level, though there is a shortage of specialists. Vaccination against yellow fever and cholera is necessary.

Sun
The African sun can be very harsh. Sun blocks, hats and sunglasses are essential during the summer months.

Benin Safety
Benin is one of the safer African countries. Use common sense, for example, do not flaunt cash or wear a lot of expensive jewellery. Crime rate especially in Cotonou is growing, especially along Marina Boulevard and beaches, criminals are mostly armed and do not hesitate to use their arms. Be aware of abundant financial fraud.

All visitors intending to drive require an international drivers permit.
